The
Argentine tango
Vincent Hodin has been teaching tango for regular lessons in Paris since 2016,
and also gives classes and workshops in international queer and traditional tango events.
A discovery
I discovered the tango in 2013 during a trip to Argentina. After my first class, after my first milonga, something had lit an unextinguishable fire of enthusiasm within.
So I started training in Le studio DINZEL. I traveled to Córdoba (Argentina) to follow the teaching of several maestros. I was very quickly drawn to the change of role in tango partnerships.
I continued my training back in Paris where the dance allowed me to better understand the organic mechanisms of the body in improvising with a partner and culminated in a better dynamic understanding of myself with others.
It is a dance that fascinates those who practice it to the point of often becoming a passion, even an obsession. You can only understand this magic by dancing. And when you watch a couple dance, you feel there is something happening beyond words.
Since 2016, I have been teaching tango in traditional tango and queer tango associations and collectives.
I love to teach this dance and I pride myself on the transmission of connection and technique.
I am involved in the heart of tango events such as the international queer tango festival in Paris, "La Vie en Rose" which takes place every year, it brings together 300 people. We are a team of five people at the organisational level.
Queer Tango
The Queer Tango has actually existed for more than fifteen years and means dancing a tango outside the conventional rules of men who guide and women who are guided. It was initiated by the international LGBTQI + community (Lesbians, Gays, BiEs, Trans, Queer, Intersexes).
Queer tango is necessary in our society because it is an inclusive tango, where everyone is welcome, regardless of their identity, gender expression or sexuality. It is still traditional Argentine tango, with due respect for its technique.
It is to be welcomed that traditional tango is more and more open to so-called queer tango in the sense that it is possible to dance tango between men or between women in traditional balls. And even if the majority of people are sensitive to this approach, respectful of diversity, queer tango also allows you to create a serene dance space, of safety for people sometimes marginalized by a conservative society. There are regular Queer milongas (Argentinian tango balls) in several cities around the world practicing inclusive queer tango in a safe space. International Queer tango festivals are held every year all over the world.
A pedagogy
It is above all about creating a duo connection.
My sensitivity for dance and my closeness to improvisation created a very intense encounter with tango. Indeed, this dance of incredible richness opens up possibilities for connectivity and exchanges between two partners.
Like a foreign language, you learn to master this language, which becomes universal and powerful. When this code is integrated, the dance leaves room for your creativity, your originality, your “Me” to share with your partner.
This division exists between your chests, behind the hollow of a knee, on the back of the foot. Each interstice between the two bodies is a world of possibilities, questions and answers, bathed in music and in mutual respect. Partners embrace around this common center. It’s good, We have arrived where we want to be. The tango is danced where you are, with modesty or perhaps extraversion. Each encounter is rich and unique.
Thanks to a precise technique, the tango is far from being a macho dance where a partner is manipulated. This technique allows a strong connection between the dancers. It is synonymous with dialogue. "A woman" does not follow the instructions of a "man", the person who follows responds with his color to the original proposals of the person who guides. Thus, for dancers who wish, I encourage them to change roles frequently, regardless of their orientation or the expression of their identity.
